FIFA 23: FUT Moments

FUT Moments is single player mode within FUT that gives you bite-sized challenges to complete in short gameplay scenarios with adjustable difficulty levels. Overturn a 2-0 deficit to win the game in the last 15 minutes, recreate a screamer from the weekend’s action, run through the opposition to score with your keeper, and much more, with new challenges added throughout the season to give you new FUT Moments to tackle.

Problem

Many FUT players struggle to stay engaged with the game beyond the initial excitement of its launch. They often find themselves lacking meaningful content that connects real-world events to the game, leading to a decline in long-term interest and participation. Additionally, the current structure lacks a cohesive and immersive narrative experience, resulting in a fragmented gameplay experience that fails to captivate players over time. Without a compelling and engaging framework, players may lose interest and seek entertainment elsewhere, impacting user retention and overall satisfaction with the FIFA Ultimate Team experience.

Role

Interface Design owner for a new game mode inside FIFA Ultimate Team, giving players a chance to play bite-sized challenges to complete in short gameplay scenarios with adjustable levels of difficulty.  By exploring a number of different visual concepts, aligning with key stakeholders and continuously iterating based on feedback, I was able to come up with a design that gives the players a terrific gameplay and user experience.

Solution

Introducing Moments Hub, a dynamic addition to FIFA Ultimate Team that enhances the gaming experience by integrating real-world events seamlessly. It offers structured campaigns and stories, ensuring continuous engagement and immersion for players. With the flexibility to tailor their experience, players stay invested long-term, earning rewards along the way. Moments Hub transforms FIFA Ultimate Team into a more engaging and satisfying gaming environment.

01/ Key Features

Moments Hub

FUT Moments' structure uses campaigns, which act as containers for content — these can be permanent or limited-timed. A campaign can also adhere to an overarching theme and aims to connect real-world events to FIFA Ultimate Team, such as FIFA World Cup.

Moments' Chapters

Each campaign consists of a number of 'Chapters', which is a selection of FUT Moments and contain smaller sub-theme of the campaign. In a World Cup example, these sub-theme could be by Country or World Cup Stage. In order to complete a Moments Chapter, players have to achieve all stars available from its Stories.

Moments Stories

Stories are individual gameplay challenges that can be found within Chapters. These are gameplay experiences of varied length and type and each one is associated with a star rating. Players are able to select the star rating (between one to three) which acts as a level of difficulty for each Story. Upon completing each Story, players receive the number of Stars associated with that story, which also acts as an in-game currency that can be used to redeem rewards in the Star Gallery.

Since these are bite-sized challenges, players need an easy way to restart the challenge if they fail the first time. FUT Moments' End of Match Flow is quick and efficient in showing players which objectives they failed to complete, restart the challenge with one click, or show the rewards player get if the challenge is successful.
